How to Level Skinning
What is Skinning?
Skinning is pretty self-explanatory in that it is literally skinning animals for their hides. It is one of the most important Gathering Trade Skills because materials gathered from the skill can be used in weapon, armor, and consumable recipes—it's virtually impossible to craft anything without it. It is also one of the easiest.
To skin an animal, you need a Skinning Knife which can be either crafted at a Workshop or bought from the Trading Board. You can skin any creature that's level 30 or below at any level, but you'll need to reach Skinning level 70 if you want to get hides from anything higher.
These are all the Skinning Knives available in New World:
- Flint Skinning Knife
- Iron Skinning Knife
- Steel Skinning Knife
- Starmetal Skinning Knife
- Orichalcum Skinning Knife
Flint is the lowest tier of Skinning Knife and while it's great for beginners, you're going to want an Iron one at least if you want to level up quickly.

Equip your knife and then kill an animal with your regular weapon. Once it's down, stand over it and press E to skin it. Skinning also yields other materials such as meat which are used to cook and make potions, and it can also drop Azoth sometimes too—guaranteed if you have the Azoth Extraction Perk.
Tracking
Once you've hit Skinning level 25, you will be able to start tracking Small Prey like rabbits and turkeys. You can see them in your compass at the top of the screen when you're near one, making it easy to hunt them down.
Here's what Skinning level you need to be to unlock new tracking types:
Level 25: Small Prey tracking
Level 50: Medium Prey tracking
Level 75: Large Prey tracking
Level 125: Small Predator tracking
Level 175: Large Predator tracking

How to Level Skinning Fast
The best way to level up your Skinning up to level 70 or so is to hunt wolves. On your map, look for Wolf Dens which appear as a wolf and mountain icon—Dankfur Hollow in Windsward and Crawtick Cave in Everfall are just two options. Here, the predators will spawn very frequently, making killing and skinning them a quicker process. It may take a while to level once you've hit 50 or so, but you want to reach 70 so you can take on larger foes.
Past level 70, you should be looking to kill bigger game. Cutlass Keys, the level 26-35 area west of First Light, is where we'd advise heading to next if you're a high enough character level to take down the enemies here. Head to Balmy Veldt which is southeast of the Fort in the north and look for an animal called Lushhunt Pointer. You can hunt this all the way to level 200, though other predators like wolves work too.
How to Level Skinning Ultra Fast
This final method is an exploit and will allow players to level their skinning at an alarming rate that is absolutely unintended by the developers. It makes use of a spawn glitch that brings wave after wave of never ending boars to eliminate and skin.

Make your way to Restless Shore and head to the northern side of this region. Restless Shore can be found to the far East of the map and you'll find yourself at a camp called Boarsholm. If this exploit hasn't been patched, you'll know you've reached the correct area when you see a massive amount of players spamming the hoard of boars. It's very competitive here so make sure you're constantly pressing your Interact keybind to get the most out of your time here. The Boars in this location can give you over 600 Skinning experience and level you to 200 is as little as an hour, as well as give you plenty of character XP as your Skinning skill levels up.
Be sure to keep an eye on the ground as well, as these boars can still drop on level loot from time to time. An area boss, Tuskgore, will also spawn here every minute or so. If you're lucky enough to be the one to skin this boss, you get tons of XP and over 1100 skinning experience.
Now that you're a Skinning pro, take a look at our How to Level Weaponsmithing and How to Level Armorsmithing guides so that you're best equipped for survival on your Aeturnum adventure.
